the simple life: walk this way

At the risk of sounding like I am 22 going on 87 (although this is admittedly not much of an exaggeration), I would like to just take a moment to sing the praises of walking.

"Two roads diverged in a wood and I - I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference." ~ Robert Frost

This post is part of a new series I want to start about life's little simple pleasures. My sister and I have been talking lately about how we dislike the current culture in America. And as a Christ follower, I want to live different. I want to live slower-paced. I don't want to get caught up in the obsessions and Internet culture that my peers do. I want to live my life more naturally, more in step with the Lord. And one of the steps (pun 100% intended) I've been taking towards a slower-paced lifestyle lately is walking.

"A song is anything that can walk by itself." ~ Bob Dylan

Not only does walking help burn calories (if you're trying to get in shape like me, this is a definite bonus), but it gives you time to think and reflect on your day. When I walk, I like to work my way through my neighborhood right before sunset, but sometimes I'll go to a park and wind through the tree-laden paths. I'll pray, or listen to music....sometimes I walk in the early mornings, or late evenings; after a run, before heading to school...it's simple stuff, folks. And it's beyond relaxing.

We just need to slow down, see the beautiful things.
Where do you like to walk?

  1. Mmmh, as you know from a previous comment, I also like to walk in the park. And in the winter, when no one is outside (!!!) I like to talk out loud to my Savior and just tell Him what's on my mind as if He were a friend walking with me. I only just started doing it last autumn, and my oh my what a difference it made!! It's harder to do it in the summer though, cause all the people out on the sidewalk distract my thoughts... :P and they could also, yanno, *hear* me, and then I would be known as the Girl With Extremely Long Hair That Wears Skirts and Talks To Noone.
and that is why Autumn and Winter have become my favorite seasons. ;)
